Some [Pitt] Things to Consider
March 15th, 2008 | by The Prowler |Here are some random things I was thinking about as I sit in my hotel still strung out from the redbull[s] I had to drink to get through the 7 hour drive to Kansas City tonight.
In regards to just how far this Pitt team has come, I submit the following: Doug Gottlieb has been the one hater at ESPN over the last several years who invariably talked down about the Big East in general and Pitt in particular. He is, by and large, a Big 12 homer and clearly resents the Big East for being a much deeper and more competitive conference. The item worth noting is that the Pitt hating Gottlieb has had some pretty kind words this past week, culminating in his words last night on College Game Night. He said that Pitt, right now, should be penciled into your Sweet 16 and that if Mike Cook hadn’t gotten hurt, they would be a lock for an Elite 8 and a serious contender for a Final Four. This is all speculation and I don’t take his words as meaning Pitt will make the Sweet 16. What I am pointing to is that if Doug Gottlieb is giving Pitt that kind of love, then they are seriously doing something right.
On the other hand, to keep us grounded a bit, we should consider how far they still have to go. I just watched Sportscenter and they did a several minute “analysis” package with Jay Bilas and Bob Knight. The storyline about Pitt making its 7th BE title game in 8 years wasn’t even mentioned. What was mentioned was how good Georgetown is; how big of an upset St. Joe’s had against Xavier; and, of course, the talk about the Duke/NC title game matchup (even though they each have to win 1 more game to make it to the championship). This isn’t a gripe but simply a point of interest. While Pitt is converting even the biggest skeptics such as Gottlieb, they still don’t make it as a national headline compared to Duke/NC or even Georgetown (because of their storied history). So the program is coming a long way, but still has some work to do.
The downside to Pitt’s success in the BET and Sam Young’s contribution to it is that Young will undoubtedly be getting more and more attention from agents who don’t have his best interest at heart. I sure hope he is smart enough to see what he is doing this year and realizes that he can dramatically up his NBA stock if he works on his game some more next season. Let’s get real about this. Defense in the NBA is only for the benchwarmers and the non-stars. If Sam Young can improve his 1-on-1 game to the point where he is a real threat off the drive, he won’t ever need to learn how to play defense. The only thing teams care about in the NBA (for the most part) is scoring. If he can prove he can do that, he will get picked up by someone.
There is also a downside to Pitt making the BET championship game. If the season were over tonight, I think Pitt would legitimately be a 6 seed. They have won 7 of their last 8 games and the last two were to ranked opponents. The loss to WVU doesn’t hurt Pitt but helps WVU a lot. Since that game was the only loss in the last 8 games, it won’t affect anything for Pitt. Even if they had won it I don’t think it would have changed things much. At the point they played Pitt was already being called a tourney lock. It is the wins here in the BET that are affecting everything. But Pitt has one more game to play. If they win, they are almost definitely a 6 seed, and maybe a 5 depending on how other tourneys pan out. If they lose, on the other hand, they go into selection Sunday with that loss being the most recent thing on the committee’s mind, nullifying much of the good will they have earned the last 3 games. So a win against Georgetown is huge for seeding purposes. I seriously think that if they lose the championship game they will be put right back at a 7 seed.
WVU blew their chance at making the championship a Brawl rubber match. I, for one, am glad. First of all, I love seeing WVU lose. More than that, I think they still have more at stake in this rivalry at the moment. That 13-9 football win is going to be a sore spot for a while and beating Pitt in the BET championship would go a long way to heal the wound. I am not sure Pitt would have beat them and the last thing I want to think about going into the NCAA tourney is how Pitt lost to WVU in the BET.

Prowl -
This site is really maturing into one of the best Blogs around. It’s taken over first spot I go to during my early morning rounds of sports news when I’m waking up with my first cup of java. Your writing is well done, insightful and on the mark - and even more importantly your opinions have reasonable backstories attached and are understandable.
Thanks and even though your a BB fan first (who must be loving the coaching job Dixon has done this year - masterful IMO) I’m expecting good FB analysis from you also.
About that correspondance we had a while ago - I’m seriously thinking about it.

P.S. Is your Blog’s clock on Kansas time? It’s an hour behind East Coast time.

The blow out loss to Georgetown last year did not hurt seeding one bit. A loss to Georgetown tonight will have no effect either. The people on the committee already have us on the line they expect us to be and my sense is that in their minds they probably already have a Georgetown victory as a given. We move up one line if we win and do not go down if we lose (unless wild things happen to teams in the top twenty this weekend). I suspect we are a 5 or 6 right now and will stay there no matter what.

Ya the clock is on central time.
Don’t worry I love football too. The problem is that Pitt football doesn’t get the national coverage basketball does so it is harder for me to access info for it like I can for basketball. I got to see over 20 basketball games and only got to see 2 or 3 football games this year.
I agree that Dixon has done a great job. It never ceases to amaze me how he can get the most out of his players when it counts. Sure, they hit a rough patch when Fields first got back (I did say they needed to be willing to lose those games in order to get Fields back into the flow as quickly as possible for the post-season) but they are certainly coming together at the right time.
I will give one knock, and that is that Dixon does need to get this team to win the championship game and/or a Sweet 16 game, which he has really struggled with. I think once he does that we will see this program take the next step, especially with recruiting. I just hope he doesn’t get lured away by some other school.
Pitt84- I hope you are right that Pitt’s seeding won’t drop with a loss tonight. Historically it seems that the selection committee has always been conservative with Pitt’s seedings, putting them a spot or two lower than expected. Given Pitt’s record in the Sweet 16, it is hard to argue with their selection in hindsight. I would love to see a 6 seed (and I think a 5 is reasonable, but only attainable with a win tonight). If they got a 7 seed I wouldn’t feel they got robbed or anything, but I don’t want them to have a 2 seed second round match-up. I guess the best way to avoid even the thoughts of their seed going down is to just win big tonight.

Congratulations on getting to the BET championship game, I am actually enjoying watching the Panthers right now. Sam Young has been excellent. Pitt always seems to do well in MSG. I think they have secured a solid, solid 5 seed. Even if they lose badly to Georgetown tonight, which I highly doubt, they would be a 6 seed at worst. These Panthers are a high quality bunch of thugs and they can bang with just about anybody on a neutral court. I see them in the Sweet 16. Who knows, if they beat GU tonight the Final Four is certainly possible.
WVU had a good run in the BET also. Beating Providence and UConn was a great way to finish up, especially with revenge over UConn for the loss a couple weeks ago. That UConn game showed if the ‘Eers are fresh and healthy, they can outrebound and outshoot just about anybody- even a more athletic team like the Huskies. But the third game against Georgetown was a bit much. The guys were not jumping as high, they didn’t have their legs, and everybody was tired after 3 straight games. Also Alexander was tired, he couldn’t juke people quite as well to make that fadaway 14 footer. If we don’t get Alexander going, then Ruoff has to step up and make some 3’s. DeShaun butler is always good for 15-20 points, so I never worry about him. Darris Nichols has been solid all year, and I expect him to shine in the NCAAs. But Ruoff did not step up in the Georgetown game, and I see him being a major weakness on this team. Ruoff and Jamie Smalligan are the weakest links, both defensively and on offense. So Im glad they are both seniors and we can look to the future with Bob Huggins recruiting like he has in the past, running an NBA factory at every school he’s coached (Michael Beasley would not have gone to Kansas St. had Huggins not recruited him).
Either way, I see WVU winning at least 1 game in the NCAAs, maybe 2.
