Myron Cope, Legendary Steelers’ Announcer

A black cloud hovers over Pittsburgh and Pittsburghers everywhere at the news that legendary Steelers’ announcer Myron Cope passed away today. Cope spent one season in 1983 as color commentator for the Panthers and was a 1951 graduate of the University of Pittsburgh. Cope had the kind of exuberance and passion that you hope for in an announcer. Sometimes you get these announcers who don’t sound like they are really rooting for the home team. Myron Cope was a Steelers’ fan through and through and loved this city and its people with all his heart. Amongst other things, Cope is famous for bringing the Terrible Towel into Pittsburgh Steelers’ lore. I am sure that all Pittsburgh fans across the country join me in mourning the passing of a Pittsburgh legend and a truly great man.

The University of Pittsburgh will honor Myron Cope tonight at the Pitt-Cincinnati game where fans are asked to bring their terrible towels in his honor.

You can read his obituary and an article about his life and other information about him on the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette website.
